Classic dishes from all 50 states

October 2, 2010

We are working on a project to find 50 classic dishes from each of the 50 states.  If you  have a dish you would like to nominate, please post here or email me at chill8300@att.net.  The recipe should identify your state, for example Maine is known for lobster,  Kentucky – the Hot Brown.  Can’t wait to hear from you?    (Here is a pic of our latest cake creation for a Justin Beiber fan.)

State Fair Cake

August 18, 2010

Just couldn’t resist entering the fair again.  Who knows?  Last year, I entered three different categories.  Won one and placed in all three.  A board member told me later (I didn’t know she was a board member til later) that the judges would NOT be allowed back.  Everyone was angry.  You know, that’s just the way it is in all but the largest and most prestigious competitions.  I don’t care.  I just enjoy decorating cakes.  I mean, in local contests,  you always lose money and time.  Winnings are just a prestige thing and most of the population doesn’t care anyway.  Its for me and just me.  It’s my creative side, good or bad, that is very theraputic.  Love it.  So what do YOU think?   Please let me know.  Oh here’s a bonus recipe for you,  take crescent rolls from the grocery ( or make your own, good for you) add a tablespoon of purchases cheese spread like boursin garlic – some of the good stuff.  Bake as usual.  Awesome appetizer!

A new Day

June 24, 2010

So here are some of the latest creations.  Creations for customers and for my enjoyment.  Have you ever just needed an outlet.  I guess this is it for me.  It seems that I am wearing too many hats and they are beginning to topple.  I guess you can spread yourself too thin.  So wife, mother, mimi, thoroughbred breeding farm owner, custom cake shop owner, CPA, parental caregiver and friend.  so how did it get this way.  You know,  I really don’t mind having a lot to do.  I just want to feel like doing it.  So the quest begins,  need to lose a little weight (thank Heaven it’s not  a bunch, need to lose nonetheless),  need to lower cholesterol, need to attack the energy level and on and on.  So, I’ll have to figure out how to do this.  Any suggestions???

Stack of Books cake

January 21, 2010

I was priviledged to create a “Stack of Books” cake for the grand opening of the Boyle Co. Public Library. This Kentucky Bourbon cake was filled with buttercream and covered in fondant.  The pages and covers are fondant.  The tassel is fondant and the letters R E A D are gumpaste created to match a floor-to-ceiling sculpture next to the children’s library.  We served over 400 people.  Great fun!

Sculpted puppy

January 21, 2010

A sculpted birthday cake for a 2 year old dog lover. Completely edible. See the two puppies in the background. They ended up on the cake too. This is a vanilla cream cake with vanilla buttercream frosting covered in fondant.  Ears and tail are fondant.  Eyes, nose and spots are hand-painted.  Happy Birthday!

For a wonderful birthday girl who deserved her favorite red velvet cake done in her favorite kitchen ware patterns.  This is a fondant covered cake with gumpaste ruffles and gumpaste wimsical roses.  Stripes and flowers are hand painted.  Board is covered in fondant stripes.  A fun, fun cake!
